Diversity
Our diversity programme focuses on organ and blood donation in ethnic minorities due to the critical need to address the disparities these communities face. We aim to raise awareness, promote donor registration, and support initiatives that ensure equitable access to life-saving transplants for all, regardless of their ethnic background
Organ Donation - The Problem:
- Minority ethnic groups are disproportionately affected by inequalities in transplant services in the UK
- Black, Asian and minority ethic patients often have to wait significantly longer for a successful match than White patients
- Partnerships with NHSBT aim to reduce these inequalities by working with our diverse communities
Blood donation – The Problem:
- There is a critical need for Black, Asian and minority ethnic blood donors in the UK
- Fewer than 5% of our blood donors who gave blood in the last year were from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities
- Certain conditions, such as sickle cell, are more commonly affect those from Black, Asian and Ethnic minority groups & some rare blood groups are only found in black Asian and minority ethnic communities
Our Programme

Collaboration
Our groups collaborate with other societies (e.g. Afro-Caribbean society, Racial equality society) sharing the common goal of raising awareness for organ and blood donation in these communities.
New Groups
Our London groups (KCL and UCL) were set up as part of this programme and now our diversity programme has expanded to 10 locations across the UK.
