Organ Donation
Why Donate
- Organ donation saves lives!
- Becoming an organ donor is one of the greatest gifts you can give.
- By registering to become an organ donor you could potentially save or transform the lives of up to 9 people after you have died.
- Families often feel very proud of their loved ones who donate. At a really terrible time it can be comforting to know that their loved one’s organs have saved the lives of many other people.
Why do we need more organ donors?
Around the world over 250,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant
Thousands of people die worldwide each year because there is a shortage of organ donors.
There are over 6,000 people on the UK organ transplant waiting list.
In the UK 3 people die every day while waiting for an organ donation.
Organ donation is more likely to be successful if the donor and recipient are a close genetic match. We therefore need more donors from diverse ethnic backgrounds to ensure everyone who needs one can have a well matched donation.
How can I become a donor?
You can become an organ donor by signing up to the organ donor registry and telling your loved ones of your wishes. The registry helps the healthcare teams know who wants to be an organ donor and who doesn’t after they have died. Your family would also be consulted so it is important for them to know your wishes
